The flu (influenza) and COVID-19
The flu (influenza) and COVID-19 have very similar symptoms which can make it difficult for doctors to appropriately diagnose. There are some key differences however, as well as tests which aid in identifying each disease. Here are some common symptoms for each illness:
Flu
Fever or feeling feverish/chills
Cough
Shortness of breath in severe cases (or progression to pneumonia)
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle or body aches
Headaches
Fatigue (tiredness)
Vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults)
COVID-19
Fever or chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
